Fraud, home safety and placement planning, some of the topics shared at seniors conference this year
WESTLOCK — Radio personality and talk show host Sharon Mallon will be a keynote speaker at this year’s 2024 Seniors Conference, hosted by the Westlock and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).
The annual event takes place at the Westlock Memorial Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is $10 to attend. It will include a lunch, giveaways and door prizes, and provide a time of connecting with others, while also learning about different topics and areas that are important for seniors.
“We have Sharon Mallon coming this year. She’s a motivational speaker. She’s always been so down to earth and she’s a farm-girl so I thought let’s bring her (to talk),” said FCSS program coordinator Maureen Schiller, adding Mallon will share about life’s challenges in her talk.
Schiller noted they usually see about 120 people out for the event, which will also feature talks about placement planning with guests from the Westlock Healthcare Centre and discuss the topic of fraud and personal and home safety.
“(They) will talk about the placement planning process and the importance of legals made and options for financial assistance. Then we’re having the RCMP come and talk about fraud, scams, personal and home safety,” said Schiller. “We know that that changes all the time and … there’s so much of that happening, so it’s always good to keep seniors up to date as to what’s out there.”
Although registration is officially closed, as of Oct. 8, people can still sign up for the event until Friday morning (Oct. 11) by calling (780) 349-5900.
