Organization expert reveals the most common mistakes people make when tidying their homes

An expert has revealed the five most common mistakes that people make when getting organized at home – and how to avoid them.

The video was shared on TikTok by New York City-based home expert Caroline Solomon, who often shares her tips, tricks and hacks for getting your home in order.

This time was no different, as she shared the tip five organization mistakes to avoid – starting off strong with the number one oversight, which was attempting to declutter your home in just one day.

‘Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your home,’ Solomon said.

‘Instead, focus on de-cluttering one drawer, one cabinet, or even one closet at a time and don’t be afraid to space it out by setting a timer for fifteen minutes,’ she suggested.

The next mistake that people make was when they simply move piles of stuff around without actually decluttering or organizing anything.

‘It’s really important to declutter everything first, and then you can put everything back,’ she explained.

Similarly, her third tip involved another crucial misstep, which was not taking a big bag or box along with you while you’re getting organized.

She recommended that the bags and boxes can be used for different reasons, too.

‘Have a box handy for popping in clothes to sell, and then a bag handy for donating,’ Solomon shared.

And, finally, the last two tips involved over-analyzing certain aspects of the cleaning process.

The expert advised people not to rely too heavily on a certain Instagram aesthetic and do what’s best for you and your space, as well as using a wide categories instead of ‘hyper specific’ ones while labeling and organizing certain areas of your home.

‘It’s important to choose broad categories that will set you up for success and make it really easy to deposit items,’ Solomon said as she showed a few labeled bins in her bathroom.

However, Solomon isn’t the only person who has some valuable organizing tips to share.

Last year, professional celebrity organizer Lisa S. Jacobs, founder and CEO of Imagine It Done, shared some tips to get your closet looking like that of an A-lister.

Jacobs abides by her signature ‘5 step process’ with all of her clients, starting with what’s called the ‘edit.’

‘The edit process is essential to a successful organization,’ Jacobs, who started the company in 2004, told DailyMail.com at the time.

‘For a successful edit, you need two different types of bags: clear (for donations) and black contractor bags (for trash).’

‘Make sure to label these bags so you do not confuse the garbage with the give-away, donation or items to be consigned,’ she continued.

‘Sort through and make decisions for everything. Remind yourself that the mirror reflects who you are today, not who you used to be or want to be.’

The professional organizer furthered that this step is crucial, as it will allow you to find items that you may not have seen in a very long time.

‘Consider this a shop in your own closet experience,’ she said. ‘If you haven’t worn it, now is a great time to restyle it. This review and edit phase ultimately saves you time and money.’

She then moves on to categorizing, containing, curating, and personalizing.
